Show of hands; how many of you out there are already sick of the political ad campaigns bashing one another, and the endless news stories on TV, online, or print that are totally against the other side? Hell it’s even made its way to Facebook and other forms of social media (Isn’t the “news” in general bad enough these days?!)
It’s not that it’s wrong per say. In fact where would we be in this country if we didn’t have the power of our 5th amendment right?
And lately it’s not just political ads. I feel like I’m going into a cocooning period right now-perhaps it’s the cooler temps of Fall that I can blame. Maybe my mind just needs the rest. Maybe some hibernation is in order.
I just want to tune out the outside chaos!
What do I mean by that? It’s simply trying to reduce outside stimuli or influence, and really focus on me, and listening to what I want and need. God I sound new-agey! LOL!
I think we all fall prey sometimes to thinking about what the next guy or gal is doing. We experience their life instead of experiencing our own. Even in the blogging world there are the “jocks” and “cheerleaders” of personal fiance. The ones we kind of look up to and envy at how well they seem to be doing. How will we ever measure up?
And let’s face it, I feel pretty much that way about everyone who is at FinCon right now. I feel like the kid whose parents wouldn’t let them go on the class trip, while everyone is off having fun.
But to think that way is always a disservice to the self. In fact, Musings of an Abstract Aucklander & Modest Money both wrote great articles about being an authentic blogger…about being yourself and not paying attention to what other people are doing.
It’s easy to get caught up in that rat race. That trap of comparison. Sometimes paying attention to what other people are doing is easier to deal with than facing your own life head on.
So when the noise becomes too loud, sometimes it’s good to step back and take a break. To reevaluate what your purpose or goal is with various aspects of you life. And if you need to, take a vacation from social media. I’ve done it once. The initial feeling is anxiousness, but after that it feels pretty awesome.
So the next time you start to feel anxious, overwhelmed, too busy, envious, or start to compare your life to others, try quieting your life a little. Turn off the TV and computer, eat your meals slowly, take a long walk instead of intense cardio, and sit back and listen to people while they talk, instead of letting your mind come up with the words YOU want to speak. Even spend some time in nature without the use of your mp3 player. What?!?! I know!
It really does wonders!
A happy life must be to a great extent a quiet life, for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy dare live.
What are some ways you “turn down the noise?”
