My Skype Job Interview

The view on my way to my temporary office

I’m taking a short break in what has been a very long (yet good) week.

I’ve been working on a project all week on location in the Inland Empire (an area aprox. one hour east of Los Angeles). This was the project I was working on most of the month, but due to communication issues, we needed to rework the whole project, which was best done onsite. It is going really well (their gala is tonight where the 10 minute documentary-style video will be shown), but needles to say I want to get home and eat my own food again and not sleep in a hotel.

I would have been out here Monday, but my surprise news from Sunday was that I had a job interview via Skype Monday afternoon. The position was for a video post production supervisor for an online women’s magazine located in Arizona.

I originally offered to fly myself out there, but they told me Skype was OK. Now I should mention that I have always done well with in person interviews, but I’ve always felt really awkward doing any kind of video chat.

First, I accidentally called them a couple hours early when I was trying to set up Skype to get the best location in my apartment. I freaked out because I had just gone for a run and was sweaty and red-faced. They came up on video so I hid off to the side in case they could see me. lol! (They couldn’t)

It seemed to be an ice-breaker anyway, so I just laughed it off.

But when it came time for the actual interview, I have a feeling I didn’t do very well. I just didn’t know where to look, and generally just felt very awkward. :(

I of course followed up with a thank you, but haven’t heard a peep (even though they did mention the next round could take a couple of weeks).

I don’t know. I’m sad because I would LOVE to work at an online women’s magazine. It’s right up my ally.

So I guess only time will tell…

I’m finally playing beach volleyball this weekend despite the pain in my shoulder, and next week I start 1 of 5 personal training sessions. More on that later…

Have a great weekend!

Skype interviews are awkward. I had a conversation the other day where I was talking for over a minute and I didn’t realize they couldn’t hear me. I hope you get a second interview!!

Yeah, I wish the interview was in person, even if I had to fly out there. Call me old school.

Good Luck to you! Amazing what the internet has done for this world.. you don’t even have to leave home for an interview now. Glad to hear you are back at BVB. Cheers Mr.CBB

I’m sure you did fine in the interview. That sounds like a really cool job :)

LOL, the Inland Empire and LA are like night and day. I bet you were like, where is the 10 fwy so I can get home! :)

It does. I just don’t know how it went…

Well at the very least at least I wasn’t there before it got too hot. It was actually kind of pretty. But I’m happy to be home at the beach. :)

You know what, every interview I thought I did terrible at I get the job, and every interview I think I rocked I don’t. So I’m sure you actually did way better than you think :) Sending some good vibes your way!

      I hope you’re right! Thanks!

I’ve never done a Skype interview, but I think I’d feel horribly awkward being on the other end of a webcam! You never know – sometimes our impressions of how a situation went are vastly different from the other party’s :)

True! I guess only time will tell. Regardless, I hope to never do a skype interview again. :)

Good luck. I hope you get it!!

I’ve never had a skype interview. Did you dress nice to be on camera? I’m curious, did you look at the screen or at them in the preview box? Just trying to figure out what caused you to feel uneasy about it afterwards in case someone I know has to go through this. (or maybe even myself)

I did dress nice. I think I found myself looking at them in the preview box. It was just too weird to look straight into the camera thing. I felt like I wasn’t making eye contact. I’m not sure why I felt so uneasy. I think it’s because I never liked video chat in the first place. Either way, I’ve followed up with them several times with zero response, which I think is odd they don’t even give me any kind of response.

I had a skype interview and it also felt extremely awkward. There is something about not being in the same room as someone. I think body language is lost … hope you get the job!
