Have you ever had the feeling that good things are about to happen at any moment? Lately I’ve been feeling that way. Way better than the alternative, huh?
Monday I talked about signs (and believing in yourself). Ever since then I’ve been experiencing more and more of them.
For instance I was chatting with Andrea the other day via email, and she had some great suggestions about stuff I could do to expand my business.
That same day Carrie from Careful Cents posted a link to International Freelancers Academy, where they have a free recording about 9 powerful ways to earn income in less time. Basically it’s for freelancers to earn more without necessarily working more or raising rates. One of the strategies was exactly what Andrea was mentioning I should try.
The course was great and really informative (and free!), and got me thinking about how I want to approach things so much differently in 2013.
I know I mentioned how much I think Ramit from I Will Teach You to Be Rich is kind of a boob, but one very important lesson I did take away from his seminar about earning more money in the new year, is focusing on BIG WINS!
While I disagree with him somewhat about how you (especially if you HAVE to) should ignore cost-saving techniques like buying fewer lattes or making your own soap, I do agree it shouldn’t be ALL you’re focusing on. I want to make more money…A LOT more money than I did this year!
But to do this I need to take some chances…and risk failing…and I’m OK with that. Because I’ve had it with complacency.
Right now the wheels are spinning with all ideas I have for next year, especially the way I want to approach freelancing.
One big thing with freelancing is valuing myself and my time by not taking every pissy small job that comes my way because the client tells me:
- It will look good on your resume.
- This will lead to other projects down the road.
- I/We don’t have a lot of money in our budget.
- It won’t take that much time (that one is laughable).
- I know you need the extra money right now so I thought you’d be willing to do this.
Although if you’ve read my blog you know the last one is true, I need to hold my ground and be willing to sacrifice a little so I have the time to focus on the BIGGER WINS!
Because sometimes when you take those little projects, you spend hours for little money, when you can actually be doing other things, even though you may not be getting paid, that MAY pay off later, like building new skills, writing a blog or newsletter relating to your work, contacting clients, attending networking events, or working on building up your side business which might bring a lot more income later on.
Because I can tell you one thing from experience…when you work on too many low budget, time consuming project, it begins to make you resent what you do for a living. It begins to suck the life out of you.
And for me, one of the BIG WINS I want to focus on even more is this website, because working on it makes me so happy. And there is something to be said for that.
One of the exercises in Think & Grow Rich is to write out EXACTLY what you want money-wise, and when you want it, then read it out loud every morning and night. I don’t care how corny it sounds, I’ll try it.
My intention is to make at least 80,000 next year. That’s 42K MORE than I’ll be making this year.
One thing I have to do is believe it’s possible! Whether it’s through freelancing, this blog, other side income, or finding the perfect full time job…I have to focus on the BIG WINS. I also have to BELIEVE I’m worth it.
And a big thing for me is to stop seeing myself as everyone’s poor little friend who is struggling. If that’s what I’m projecting, that’s exactly what I’ll get back.
I know in my heart it’s possible! I know big things await…I can just feel it.
What BIG WINS are you hoping to achieve in the new year?
