Happy New Year! My 2014 Goals!

ID-100223902Happy New Year!!! As you can see my site looks totally different. That wasn’t necessarily in the plan, but with Hostgator going down yesterday, and then all of a sudden things went completely haywire on my site, Andrea from Nuts and Bolts Media stepped in and rescued me.

On Monday I did a post on my 2013 Year in Review! Overall it was a great year, but now I want to look ahead with what I’d like to accomplish in 2014!

I mentioned on Monday how I made 25k more this past year than in 2012. Because I’m a freelancer, I usually take an average of what I made per month in the previous year, and that becomes my new monthly projected income. That would mean in theory that I could give myself an almost $1700 raise per month. But I decided to only give myself a $636 raise. Why? Because it keeps me in line! And even though this year was way better than last, you never know what to expect as a freelancer.

Now you may be thinking, why give yourself a raise at all then? Great question! :) But 98% of that “raise” was only allocated to various savings buckets, and an increase to what I think I should deduct each month for taxes. That amount may have to vary, by the way, after I get my estimated tax calculations from my accountant in April. The only other raise was to my health insurance account, which is going up $66/month starting in January. Boooo!

Based on all of that, here are my goals for 2014!

Financial Goals

  • Max out my Roth IRA.
  • Get my emergency fund to 10k (Ideally I would like to get this to 15k).
  • Save $200/month for vacations.
  • Get my car fund to $4125.
  • Make at least $20k in side income.
  • Make 100k or more this year (hey, why not!).

Blog Goals

  • Attend Fincon14.
  • Host at least two giveaways on Budget and the Beach.
  • Host at least two giveaways on Healthy, Fit, and Frugal.
  • Continue to grow Healthy, Fit, and Frugal and start earning money from that blog.
  • Utilize affiliates more on both blogs.
  • Create a video e-course on Budget and the Beach (the BIG project!).
  • Create one BATB TV segment per month (even if it’s only a vlog).
  • Continue to search for more paid writing opportunities. I actually already have a big writing contract in 2014 which I’ll announce soon!
  • Reach 3k followers on Twitter, and 1k followers on Facebook.

Personal Goals

  • Travel internationally at least once (already have a trip planned to Iceland in March, which will also include a short stay in Denver before and after the trip).
  • Plan at least two domestic trips (one will be Fincon14 in New Orleans). The other might be another couple of weeks in Detroit, but I’m exploring the idea of housesitting, preferably in Austin, Bolder, or Portland.
  • Rehab my left shoulder, which means sticking to daily exercises.
  • Complete a 1/2 marathon (scheduled on February 2nd), which Anna from Are Ya Gonna Eat That is doing as well!
  • Sign up for an obstacle course run.
  • Continued daily meditation.
  • Buy a ukulele and learn how to play.

Hey awesome goals. I just did my goal planning for the year and I’m also aiming to play the ukulele. I got one for my birthday and it’s great fun. We could have virtual ‘jam’ sessions ;)

Awesome! This will be my millionth attempt at learning a musical instrument. :)

      • http://makinthebacon.net/ MakintheBacon

Love how you still kept your logo, but the overall design is more sleek and professional. :) Just out of curiosity, why the ukulele? It seems like an odd instrument to pick. Lol. I guess it’s small, portable and you can bust it out anywhere you go. You’ll have to add ukulele skits to BATB tv in the future.
I am planning on doing Warrior Dash this summer. :)

We’ll be traveling internationally for the first time since we got married!

Those are some great goals – good luck!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

      Yay! Where to?

  • http://momanddadmoney.com/ Matt @ momanddadmoney

I like the new look. Also, a video course sounds awesome! Any idea on the topic?

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Thanks! Yes, how to create great looking online videos. Something like that. I probably won’t teach HOW to edit. Too complicated since there are so many systems out there.

  • http://girlcountingpennies.com/ Eva @ Girl Counting Pennies

Great goals for 2014, Tonya! Best of luck!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

      Thanks Eva!

Those are great goals, Tonya. I really like the $100k in income goal, as well as the ukelele one, of course. Let me know how that goes!

Yes that’s a stretch goal for sure! I’m so busy with everything else right now!

      Thanks!

  • Jefferson

I can’t wait to hear more about your video projects! So awesome ..

And I think its great that you meditate daily. I used to do that, but just can’t seem to make the time anymore. It definitely helps with focus and clarity.

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

It’s just finding the time that makes the video projects tough. I’m glad the meditation finally became a habit. It took FOREVER to make it so!

  • Mrs Snarkfinance

I love the new look! Great goals for the new year. I also want to run my first 1/2 marathon. Good luck in 2014!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Thanks Snark! :) Keep me posted if you decide to do one. I have another blog chronicling my training at healthyfitandfrugal.com.

  • Fit is the New Poor

I have secret plans to run my second half marathon. I just need to figure out which one and how long it’s going to take me to re-train.

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

It’s not so secret any more! lol! Keep us posted!

  • Kali @ Common Sense Millennial

Love the new site design! And your goals – these are awesome. I’m jealous of your Iceland trip. You’ll have to share your experiences with us (and pictures, please!) when you get back. I hope you can fit in another international trip, too! 2014 sounds like it is going to be a stellar year for you :)

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Thans Kali! Glad you like. I’m really excited about the trip as well!

  • http://deardebt.com/ Dear Debt

You are rocking it, girl! I still can’t get over the fact you made 25k more this year in income. I need to really hustle this year if I want to make all my dreams come true. I love your new site design, and look forward to hearing about your trips. 2014 will be a good year, I know it! I can’t wait to hear about your writing contract too. I need to get some gigs on the books and have many goals I need to write out and post. Trying to recover from the plague!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Oh you got it too? It’s no fun I know. Thanks for your kind words and hope this year is great for both of us!

  • Girl Meets Debt

New look, new year, but I’m glad it’s still the same Tonya. :) I like your goals for 2014, especially earning an extra $20k in side income. I could only dream of this for now but one day… :)

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

If i can do it you can Wendy! Especially with the blog!

  • E.M.

Those are some amazing goals. I am sure 2014 will be a great year for you. I will be looking forward to the monthly videos!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Ah pressure! I wish I had an more systematic and easy way to make them. It requires more than me sometimes so that’s the challenge!

  • Holly Johnson

Great goals! Let me know how that ukulele goes. I had to google it!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

lol! will do! It’s such a cute little instrument!

  • Erin @ My Alternate Life

$25k more?! Damn girl, awesome job!

I love your goals. One of the first things my nerdy self wants to do after paying off debt is max out my Roth iRA for the first time ever. I currently deposit $100 a month, but I hate seeing it increase so slowly :/

Can’t wait to see you in New Orleans! Or maybe even Portland? :)

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Thanks Erin! I know I love how we get excited by that goal! *snort* Yay Nola! And who knows about Portland. I’m exploring short term housesitting gigs.

  • Ryan @ Impersonal Finance

These are some aweomse goals Tonya! Especially the uke! My wife bought one of those a few months ago and has been teaching herself- I think it’s defintely something you could do. I’m looking forward to seeing all of your progress (especially with your side income). All of you successful bloggers are definitely motivation!

    • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Tonya

Thanks Ryan! That’s good to know it’s not too difficult. I think for me it’s finding the time to learn how to play. I already feel so busy!

  • Mackenzie

Good luck with your goals, Tonya! Learning to play the ukulele sounds so cool; I’ve always wanted to learn how to play he piano :)

  • alwayshungry4

Wow, 6 digit salary figure – love that goal! Can’t wait to run the half with you, it’s so close! I love the ukelele goal, as well – best wishes in accomplishing all of them, girl! :)

  • AvgJoeMoney

    Ukulele?

  • http://www.LisaVsTheLoans.com/ Lisa vs. the Loans

Great income goals, Tonya! I’m sure you’ll knock ‘em out of the park :)

  • http://shopmyclosetproject.com/ Michelle

You are going to ROCK 2014!! I especially love the Freelance Income goals. Can’t wait to read a post at the end of 2014 saying you kicked financial butt!! The meditation on is so hard. Too bad there isn’t enough time to go to the Stupa in Colorado-it’s a great place to meditate.

  • http://notyourmamasstyle.com/ NotYourMamasStyle

I can’t wait to hear about your 1/2 marathon, Tonya! You’re a rock star! Also, I will definitely see you in New Orleans later this year. I think your 6 figure income goals are very attainable if you keep up the awesome work with the writing!
