Memorial Day is what most people view as the official kick-off to summer, and with that comes summer vacations. Since a lot of my readers do have kids out of school or lighter work loads, it seems pretty obvious that summer would be the perfect time to take that much-needed R & R.
Even though I don’t have kids, I definitely feel that itch to go somewhere this time of year, especially since my freelance work often slows down, which is kind of a double-edged sword when you think about it since you have the time, but are worried about money. When I am making lots of income, I’m usually too busy to travel. Go figure.
Even more enticing is I have thousands of travel rewards just burning a hole in my
By the way if you are new to my site or a non PF blogger, credit cards, if used responsibly, are a great way to earn travel points for flights and hotels!!
When I start to stress about work, I can’t help but jump on Kayak.com and start to enter different destinations around the world, where I can say “screw you guys, I’m outta here!” 🙂 Even if it’s just a quick trip. But I have my sites set on greater things.
For the longest time I have wanted to visit Croatia. The woman who used to cut my hair has family there, and every year she used to visit, then show me pictures and tell me stories about it.
For some reason I picture myself strolling cobblestone streets in quaint villages on high cliffs above the coast, sipping wine and tapas at a small, intimate cafe. Just watching the world go by…
Then, sometime last year I watched a House Hunters International episode, where two men were trying to buy some country estate in Most Na Soci, Slovenia. Since it borders Croatia, why not go to both? And why not make it something like a two-week trip?
Waiting patiently to travel somewhere big reminds me of the experiment they did with kids, where they put them in a room with one cookie, and they were allowed to eat that cookie, but if they waited 15 minutes without touching it, they could get two! What would I do if I were in that room? Tough to say…if it were a freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie I might have a hard time waiting.
The point is if I wait, I could earn even MORE travel rewards with cards, thereby making the trip practically free, or a LOT less expensive. Plus that gives me even more time to save for the trip.
OK so some of you know I am going to New Orleans for Fincon14, which could be construed as a vacation, but I do consider it a work-related trip…a very FUN work-related trip, but not the kind where you totally check out.
And of course I did just go to Iceland in March, but the trip was VERY quick! For some reason (based on past travels), two weeks seems like the ideal amount for me to really check out and recharge. Everyone is different.
What about you? Where would you want to spend a two-week trip? Are you willing to sacrifice traveling today to save for a much bigger trip tomorrow?
