What is Labor Day? According to the United States Department of Labor, Labor Day is “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Geez, sounds like work! 🙂
Recently, an acquaintance posted something on Facebook that made me roll my eyes. He had just attended another “rock star” summit for some pyramid type company, where thousands of other die-hard followers/sellers of this product dance and party down into the wee hours, because they are gonna be fast
millionaires billionaires in no time!!
He #hashtagged the picture with all these Secret-esque type quotes that…I don’t know, are either supposed to get me pumped up about his life, or perhaps try and convince me to sell this product too.
Well in fact I know he is. Because when he found out about my website and learned of my sometimes cash-flow struggles as a freelancer, he tried to convince me that selling the product (which is soooooooooooo easy!!!!!), is the quickest way to fortune.
The funny part? I happen to know he and several of those types trying the next get rich quick scheme are in tons of financial doo-doo themselves. Go figure!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news…
Here’s the thing…and I hate to tell ya this because you know how much I don’t like being a Debbie Downer: you have to work hard to be successful. Yes, even that crazy Kardashian clan works…well maybe work isn’t the right word for them…let’s say, plots to be successful, and then executes. You might want to pause to get some paper towels to clean up that coffee you just spit out on your computer screen.
No, it’s true! I’m here to tell you that I think The Secret is straight-up bullshit.
Ok, before you die-hard fans of The Secret send me hate mail, I want to say that I do believe there are elements of that mindset that I do think are useful.
I think having a vision (and yes, even a vision board), and writing out your goals so they are right there in front of you, are absolutely necessary tools on your path to greatness.
I think it’s fantastic to visualize yourself wearing a fancy suit and being able to buy a first-class plane ticket without blinking an eye, but don’t actually do it unless you have the cash. Don’t have the mentality of, “if I build it, they will come.” Remember, that was ONLY a movie, and it was called Field of Dreams, not Fields of Reality.
I hear people complain about their weight, as I’m sure many of you do from time to time. But then in the gym, I see people half-ass it and phone it in. Man, that drives me crazy and tells me a lot about a person. They are the type of people who want the body of Giselle Bundchen, but have the work ethic of a sloth.
Hard work sucks! I get it! I feel the same way sometimes. But you are in denial if you think quick and easy, or just “thinking your way to riches,” is the path to long-term success. Think of all those lotto winners who end up broke because they had no idea how to value that kind of money. Or how many weight-loss surgery patients regain the weight because they bypassed all the really hard work that most people have to put in to lose the weight.
I wrote this post a long time ago but for some reason shelved it, thinking maybe it was too harsh? But then I just read Kemkem’s post the other day called, Quit your job, sell your stuff and be a digital nomad? NO. Not Yet! She said in her post, “You know how a lot of the top-tier bloggers make money? By selling the “make money online” dream. In other words, it’s a fancy name for pyramid scheme.”
While I’m not bashing anyone selling courses on how to make money online, I will say that that line resonated with me, because I think the ones who are buying into “the dream” or “the magic bullet” by plopping down tons of money for “the secret” are going to be constantly searching and feeling unsatisfied.
While there may be 1% of the population that might have discovered some kind of magic bullet to becoming rich or successful, the rest of us are just going to have to dig in and get our hands dirty.
With that said, Happy Labor Day! 🙂
Do you have friends trying to sell you on some kind of get rich quick scheme? Have you ever fallen prey to that yourself?
