Happy (Start of the) Holidays!
Did all my American friends enjoy their Thanksgiving? It was really nice to have four days off.
We had a Thanksgiving potluck at work on Wednesday, and of course I ate way too much. mmmm pumpkin pie!
On Thanksgiving I did a local 5k charity run in the morning, then went out to breakfast (a nice couple we met on the run picked up the tab-thank you!), then went home and chilled out and watched TV the rest of the day.
Friday I went to Malibu with some friends for a hike, then started watching The Gilmore Girls revival (still have one episode to go). All I can say is I want to see the Stars Hallow musical. 🙂
Saturday I went to a movie with Melanie (we saw Edge of 17-pretty good!), and then went out for drinks and a bite to eat.
Today I took Pepe to the vet…again, but I’ll get to that in a second. Let’s get to the review…
This month I hit a net worth milestone. I thought about sharing that number but in the end decided against it (you can email me if you’re dying to know). I can say my overall net worth did increased by $6,811 since last month. That’s an increase of $46,656 since the beginning of the year.
I also reached another milestone of paying off the last of my credit card debt. This was a bit unceremonious, as I could have paid it off much earlier, but it was at 0% interest so I was just paying the minimum balance per month until the interest rate went up.
I also came in at budget with groceries! It’s still probably higher ($420) than most people’s food budget, but I can live with that.
What hasn’t been cheap once again is Pepe. I thought I was going to make it a month without him going to the vet, but he has started spraying in my bathroom (right on my nice white cloth shower curtain). This is not a bad behavior problem so much as a “hey mom, something is wrong with me” problem.
Although I had been slowing weaning him off the Prednisone, the medication can cause UTI’s, which I suspect it is (still waiting for the lab results). Needless to say, I had to buy a plastic shower curtain from Target, along with Nature’s Miracle (to try and get the stains/smell out), the vet visit, an antibiotic shot (just in case it is a UTI) and a plug-in cat pheromone (not kidding) to see if that helps calm him down).
I had to drain my sh*t is getting old fund (I should just re-name it the “Pepe is an old fart” fund) to the tune of nearly $500. I also bought a black light on Amazon so I could go through the apartment to make sure he hasn’t sprayed anywhere else. I’m really scared of what I might find.
I’m just going to group the rest of my month into this category.
At work I hired a new member of my team, so that makes 5 of us now on the video team. I’m excited to move into our new building mid-December, and since it will be my one-year anniversary in December, I’ve earned two work-from-home day per month, and I plan to use them! Maybe every other Friday?
I also did a couple hikes this month, and saw the movie Manchester by the Sea, which was great and had stellar acting! I’m stoked all the Oscar-y movies are coming out now, and the one time of year I give myself more theater time instead of renting on Redbox.
This month my mom is visiting me at Christmas, so I need to think of mom-friendly activities around LA. I think overall it will be pretty low-key.
I’m also going to take a hardcore savings break and actually buys some (gasp) clothing items and un-frump (as Mandy likes to call it) this month. I do have my colonoscopy scheduled for this week, so that should help. lol!!!
I’m also going to think more about where I want to travel next year. I know I want to visit Mrs. Frugalwoods in fall in Vermont (hope she knows this-lol), but I’m still on the fence about Europe.
I also want to work on what goals (personally and professionally) I want to accomplish next year. And truth be told, I want to do something for NYE. I almost NEVER do ANYTHING, and if I want some newness in my life, I need to get myself out of my own rut, ya know? There is a season to save, and a very short season to practice ultimate self-care and a little shopping (guilt-free)!
Lastly I want to say that the holidays are really hard for many people for one reason or another (financial, loneliness, not having family or a significant other). Take the time to reach out to someone who may look like they are down. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word or small gesture to change someone’s day for the better.
This has been a tough month for our country, and for several people I know who are going through a lot of personal turmoil. Be nice to others, and yourself!
That’s all from me, hope you have a very safe and happy December!
