I figure I’d address what might be on everyone’s mind who read my January Rewind post about Pepe, right in the title. 🙂 Yes, Pepe is still “with us.” I decided to try the kitty Prozac, which they said could take a month to kick in (I’m using a transdermal formula, which I rub right into his ear), and I’ve seen progress. He’s not entirely over his problem, but it has lessened, so I’m still just monitoring things.
Let’s talk money
My net worth went up $5,538, despite having a few rather large purchases this month, which I’ll get to in a minute. I use Personal Capital (which is awesome and totally free to sign up) to track my net worth.
I’m also diving deeper into the expenses portion of Personal Capital, something I really hadn’t done before, so I can more closely monitor monthly spending habits, particularly my sore spot: Groceries. I want to try and get my spending a bit lower than last year, even though it may be hard because of some travel this year.
Speaking of which, I booked my inter-Europe flight from Munich to Split, Croatia where my tour officially starts. It cost me $228, so overall I spent $1,003 on all of my flights combined. I’m sure travel-hackers are rolling their eyes, but don’t even get me started on the headaches I’ve had with trying to sign up for credit cards for bonuses. I seriously don’t get it why I keep getting denied, but that’s another post for another time.
Anyway, all that’s left to do now is book some Airbnb rooms and save money for May for food and other discretionary spending. Basically I pretty much have enough in my Digit account to cover that (another one of my favorite saving tools).
I also signed up for the Lola Money Retreat August 18-20 in Portland. I’m so excited that Melanie from Dear Debt organized this retreat. I think it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for since I want more of a conference about money versus #hustlehard #girlboss. For that I’ll have enough points on Southwest to cover the flight.
I also want to take a long weekend trip sometime before May to use a Southwest travel voucher that will expire, so I was thinking of someplace kind of close that would be on the cheaper side. I was thinking New Mexico (since I’ve never been), or could do a weekend in San Francisco or Tahoe.
So is everyone watching the Oscars? I’m writing this pre-awards show, but I think La La Land will take a lot of awards, but methinks there will be a lot of upsets. It always makes it more interesting. One thing that I can guarantee is a lot of political jokes. He f*cking deserves it! Pardon my French.
I have seen some of the movies nominated. I rented Hacksaw Ridge on Friday, which was incredibly graphic and gory (don’t eat a spaghetti dinner while watching), but also remarkable in what this one guy did (it’s a true story) to save lives in WW2 without harming one single soul.
I also watched Arrival last week which was SO. GOOD! It was incredibly thought-provoking and interesting. Amy Adams is great!
I still want to see Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences and Loving. Just waiting for them to come to Redbox. BTW, how in the hell does Redbox make money? It’s so cheap and half the time I have a free movie coupon code. Can’t beat that!
ETA: Holy shit did you watch the end of the Oscars? That was more awkward then watching Denzel’s face when Casey Affleck won best actor? #epicfail!!!!
Other Random Stuff
Did you all watch the Super Bowl? That was pretty exciting. I’m team agnostic so I just got to watch a good football game. At work we have a big Super Bowl party every year and the theme was 80s/90s movies so my team went as The Breakfast Club. It was fun!
Next month my goal is to start working on my backyard. When my neighbor Michael left (I share my backyard with two other neighbors), he took a lot of his stuff with him, so the deck is looking sad.
I want to stain or paint the deck (whatever is easiest and cheapest) because it’s really weathered, and get the yard ready for my garden.
Any other tips on how I can fix it up/decorate frugally? Should I power wash and stain or just paint the deck?
How was your month?
