We all know that money is typically a taboo topic that most of us don’t want to talk about, and I personally think it’s harder for women to have these conversations. Enter the Lola money retreat, which was co-founded by my good friend Melanie from Dear Debt. It’s a place where female money geeks (such as myself) and non-geeks are encouraged to talk nothing but money. And we women NEED to be talking about money.
I wanted to talk to Melanie more about the conference, which is August 18-20th in Portland, Oregon, about why she felt the need to start this conference, and what women who attend, can expect.
And for a limited time only, readers of this blog who sign up for the retreat can use the promo code BEACH for $50 off!!! But hurry because this conference will likely sell out!
What is the Lola Retreat?
Lola Retreat is a women + money gathering taking place this summer in Portland, Oregon on August 18-20. Emma Pattee and I started Lola as a way to create a community of women coming together to learn, share, and empower each other to get our finances in order.
The retreat will focus on money mindset, love + money, earning more and investing.
Our goal is to have actionable, tactical workshops that leave our attendees with next steps. Yes, we’ll have some inspirational talks too, but we’re focusing on action. We want all of our attendees to have a plan moving forward after the event — and come away with lifelong friendships.
How did the event come about?
Emma and I both have experience organizing events and we just came together with a shared passion for all things women and money. It just seemed like the right time and place to do something like this.
Where does the name come from?
I have to tell you, we struggled a lot with the name at first. It took us FOREVER to come up with a good batch of names. Then we had a few and got some feedback from our peers. The names were too “money” or too “businessy”.
We wanted the retreat to be memorable yet not alienating. So we decided to go in a completely different direction and name the retreat an actual female name. We came up with Lola because in our mind Lola evokes a sense of strength, boldness, creativity and passion.
Also, I’m a huge fan of Damn Yankees and love the song, “Whatever Lola Wants” that says “Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets”. We’re taking that philosophy and saying — yeah, we can have whatever we want. And money can help us get there.
How does this conference differ from other money conferences?
Our retreat will be different in that it’s not just talks but it’s going to be really hands-on with workshops. We’re also getting to the root and the heart of many money issues that aren’t often talked about. I think having access to a financial therapist, couples counselor and salary negotiation expert make it really unique. We’re really relying on experts here to deliver to our attendees.
Lola is also smaller than many conferences. We’ll be capping it at about 60-80 women, so we’ll have the space to have those deep conversations.
What kinds of topics or speakers are you expecting?
We are working on other speakers and the keynote right now. We’ll be adding investing sessions for beginners and likely a FIRE component as well. It’s important to us to cater the programming to our attendees so we have a questionnaire we have them fill out, which helps us determine our programming.
Why do you think it’s important that women have a money conference?
Good question! From research, when women are in a room with men they get interrupted and also women are prone to speak less. Of course, that’s not all scenarios, but with something as intimate as money I think it’s important to create safe spaces where we can chat about our evolving roles.
Women are becoming the breadwinners more and more. Women typically live longer than men. The divorce rate is near 50%. At some point, women will have to manage their money and we want to make sure they are set to do that — and achieve the life they want as well.
What other details would you like people to know about the Lola Retreat?
This is going to be FUN! And life changing! We’re kicking it off with cocktails on Friday night and will have programming all day Saturday. We’ll have fun breakout sessions and we’re planning fun times for Saturday night and a nice goodbye on Sunday.
Also, we know that this is an investment — something that we mention on our site. But we truly believe that the ROI will be worth way more than the initial investment. Also, we’re covering most food and drink, so you don’t have to worry much about that!
