When we start looking for a house, we typically set our budget and the required number of bedrooms and bathrooms. To find a perfect home, there are other things to consider. This is a place we are moving into for a long time and we don’t want to end up hating the place because we didn’t think about things like location or floor plan. Whether you are looking at homes in Kaneohe Hawaii (and let’s face it, millions of people dream of it) or moving around the block, use these tips to find the right fit for you and your family!
The Floor Plan
The floor plan of your ideal home is really a lot more important than just the number of bedrooms necessary. How many floors do you want or need? Do you envision all the bedrooms on an upper floor? If you have any health issues or special needs, those should also be considered. Caring for Grandma who has had hip replacement may not do well in a two story house. Some people don’t want to worry about a two story home if they are making this their lifelong stay, at some point old age sets in and stairs can become difficult and that makes the single floor layout desirable.
How about the bathrooms? You certainly don’t want one bathroom for a family of four! Furthermore, where are these bathrooms located? If you have a two story home, there should be at least a half bath on the lower floor for guests to use. Most people don’t want that half bath too close to the kitchen. Then again, you might want it that close if you are always in the kitchen.
Let’s talk about laundry space. Growing up, the laundry space was in the basement or on the first floor. These days the trend is to put them close to the bedrooms, often on the upper level. Is that desirable to you?
Lastly, imagine your dream home in your mind. Walk through the front door and tell yourself exactly where everything is. Find a place that fits that floor plan and walk through it in real life!
Grow or Downsize With the Home
Depending on your stage of life will have an impact on your desires and needs. If you are young with a growing family, you want a larger home that you can grow into. Children grow up, new additions come along, and life grows in big ways. Too small of a home and you will have to move in just a few short years.
On the flip side, your perfect home may be coming at a time in which the children are moving on and you are left with too much space for you and your partner. This is the perfect time to find that cozy cottage that gives you just enough space to enjoy each other’s company without feeling lost in a maze of rooms. Too large of a home can cause you to spend way more time cleaning it than necessary.
Cost is Everything
Of course, price is a factor! This is the time where you truly cannot go over budget and coming in under budget is often ideal. When looking for the perfect dwelling, don’t rush yourself. Take plenty of time to look, dig through ads, and really hunt for the right place. It could be that in order to get the right fit for you, you have to move to a new area. That can be one of the scariest options or one of the more exhilarating opportunities. As long as you are able to move with your employment, we highly encourage you to follow the road to your new abode!
Finding that dream home and moving can be one of the scarier things we do in life. Often it feels like you are beginning all over again and many want to avoid that “start from scratch” aspect of a move. Our suggestion is to go for it because a new chapter in life means amazing stories to share later.
